The Sindhi language has always nurtured a rich heritage of literature, poetry, and cultural thought. Yet, within this vibrant tradition, works of systematic academic philosophy remain comparatively rare. In this context, Naveed Sandeelo’s Sindhi book فلسفي جي تاريخ History of Philosophy emerges as a landmark contribution — a monumental attempt to trace the roots, development, and relevance of philosophical thought, with a particular focus on Greek philosophy. This book is not merely a collection of ideas, it is the culmination of decades of scholarly dedication, representing a milestone in Sindhi intellectual discourse.
Scope and Content of the Book
Spanning 14 chapters, History of Philosophy covers an extraordinary range of intellectual developments, beginning with Greek mythology and early literary traditions and moving through ancient, classical, and modern philosophical thought.
Key highlights include:
Greek Natural Philosophers — including Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Pythagoras, Anaxagoras, and Protagoras.
Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Diogenes — their revolutionary ideas are presented with conceptual clarity and academic rigor.
Branches of Philosophy — tracing the evolution of metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, and logic.
Influence on Modern Thought — connecting the legacy of Greek philosophy with contemporary philosophical debates.
One of the book’s remarkable strengths is its integration of authoritative global scholarship. References to W. C. Guthrie, Eduard Zeller, John Burnet, W. T. Stace, Bogomolov, and Frank Thilly lend the work academic credibility and situate it within the broader intellectual tradition.
Language and Style
The book is distinguished by its unique balance between academic rigor and linguistic accessibility. Sandeelo adopts a clear, literary, and engaging style that simplifies complex philosophical arguments without oversimplifying their meaning.
For Sindhi-speaking readers, this work represents something truly groundbreaking: it teaches philosophy in their native language, offering conceptual clarity while retaining intellectual depth. The book’s literary elegance enhances its readability, making it a rare combination of scholarship and artistry.
Scholarly Significance
According to Amar Sindhu, a leading voice of the Women’s Liberation Movement in Sindh:
“By writing this book, Naveed has taught philosophy in Sindhi. I have not only read the book myself but also teach it to my philosophy students.”
This endorsement reflects the pedagogical impact of the book, which has already become an essential reference for philosophy students and educators alike. Considering that the book represents over 24 years of research, reflection, and relentless effort, it is one of the most significant academic contributions to Sindhi literature in recent decades.
Naveed Sandeelo’s History of Philosophy is more than a book — it is a scholarly milestone. Its scope, depth, and literary brilliance make it an indispensable resource for students, researchers, and anyone seeking to engage with the foundations of human thought.
In my view, the book sets such a high benchmark that it may take another hundred years for Sindhi literature to witness a philosophical work of comparable magnitude.
For young readers, scholars, and philosophy enthusiasts, this book is not only recommended but essential.
Author and His Intellectual Roots
Naveed Sandeelo was born in the historic village of Hakeem Sandeelo, located near the ancient ruins of Mohenjo Daro, the five-thousand-year-old cradle of the Indus Valley Civilization. He grew up in the home of Qurban Sandeelo, a progressive intellectual and nationalist thinker, whose passion for English, Bengali, and Urdu literature profoundly influenced his son’s formative years.
Surrounded by an environment steeped in books, debates, and revolutionary thought, Naveed’s childhood was shaped by encounters with great literary and philosophical voices. Among his earliest exposures to world literature were Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities,” Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and “Romeo and Juliet,” Christopher Marlowe’s “Doctor Faustus,” and the timeless poetry of William Blake, Goethe, Shelley, and Keats.
Simultaneously, his intellectual foundation was enriched by revolutionary philosophers and political thinkers such as Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin, and Mao Zedong. Within his home, discussions about the struggles and visions of Haider Bux Jatoi, G. M. Syed, and Rasool Bux Palijo helped instill in him a strong sense of social consciousness and critical inquiry from an early age.
Naveed pursued his early education in his native village, later completing his matriculation at Government High School Dokri and Intermediate studies at Dokri College. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Philosophy with Honors from the University of Sindh.
In 2022, he completed his MPhil in Philosophy from Government College University (GCU), Lahore, earning distinction for his thesis titled: “Existentialist Trends in Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s Thought”.
This groundbreaking research explores the intersection of Sindhi mystical poetry and existentialist philosophy, demonstrating Sandeelo’s deep engagement with both local and global philosophical traditions.
Currently, Naveed Sandeelo is pursuing his PhD in Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, University of Karachi, where he continues his research on existentialism, phenomenology, and modern philosophical movements.
Professionally, he began his career at Oxford University Press, working as an editor in the Sindhi Section, where he contributed significantly to the Oxford English-Sindhi Dictionary. For over nine years, he has served as a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy, University of Sindh, dedicating himself to teaching, research, and mentorship.
In addition to History of Philosophy, Naveed has also authored another significant book on the philosophy of existentialism, expanding his scholarly contributions to one of the most influential schools of modern thought. His earlier works include Wings of Wisdom (2003), a concise introduction to Greek philosophy in English, and a poetry collection titled “Rabeel Rut Miyanagar”. His Sindhi translation of Albert Einstein’s biography has also been warmly received by readers.
