Consultative Meeting on Human Rights held in Sukkur

Human rights issues including the violence against women, media freedom, gender equality, child labor, child marriage and protection of minorities discussed

Marvi Rural Development Organization- MRDO and Sindh Human Rights Commission jointly organized a consultative meeting on Wednesday with human rights activists, civil society organizations, UN- organizations working in Northern Sindh, women rights activists and the media representatives at Sukkur.

The aim of this meeting was to discuss the human rights issues including the violence against women, media freedom, gender equality, child labor, child marriage and protection of minorities and formulate concrete strategy to resolve these issues.

The participants talked about the criminal justice system, juvenile justice system act 2018, economic and social rights, prevention of domestic violence, and the freedoms of religion and belief and the freedom of expression both online and offline.

The participants underlined the need for the implementation of pro-women laws and to eliminate obstacles to the work of civil society organizations and media. Further they said, the commission should organize these meetings on a monthly basis and discuss the grass root issues of the communities.

Mohammad Aslam Shaikh retired judge and member (judicial) SHRC said, SHRC conduct investigations into allegations of human rights abuses, either on petitions filed by individuals or institutions, or through suo-moto action. “We also review existing and proposed legislation in relation to human rights principles and act as a court when required”.

Sughra Solangi CEO- MRDO said her is doing advocacy sessions on the implementation of the Juvenile Justice System Act 2018 and also organizing training workshops for probation department, police, judiciary and lawyers. She said in Sindh approximately 260 minors are imprisoned on petty crimes, she urged the commission to take action and try to release them from prison.

Advocate Ghazala Anjum said laws for women’s empowerment and protection from violence are in place at national and sub-national levels but their implementation remains weak.

Sarfaraz Jamali from SHRC shared the overall goal and mission of the Sindh Human Rights Commission.
