There are many opportunities for joint research work with SAU on climate change, agricultural entrepreneurship, food security and climate resilient agriculture – FAO Country Head

Ms. Florence Rolle, Country Head of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Pakistan, says the UN is playing a key role in food security and agricultural development around the world.

“No doubt many problems are arising because of climate change, growing population and pollution, and the dilapidated state of agricultural land and the growing poverty situation is a major challenge for countries like Pakistan,” she said on Saturday.

Ms. Florence Rolle, accompanied by Dr. Aamir Irshad, Director Programs, visited Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) and discussed issues of mutual interest with the university authorities. She visited various departments of the University.

During a brief ceremony at the Rest House, Ms. Florence Rolle said FAO is working together with different institutions in Pakistan for the development of Agriculture and to resolve the problems related to agriculture and food security. “The SAU has excellent infrastructure and capable experts we are also setting up an FAO center at the University.”

She added that there are many opportunities for joint research work with Sindh Agricultural University Tando Jam on climate change, agricultural entrepreneurship, food security and climate resilient agriculture. She also thanked the university authorities for providing space for the FAO’s field office.

Dr. Aijaz Ahmad Khunharo, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Sindh Agricultural University, said that University is already a partner of FAO and working in the field of Agriculture and Animal Sciences and is aware about national and global issues, and transfer of new technologies with technical assistance to local farmers and investors for the development of agriculture and agri-entrepreneurs.

Focal Person and Director University Advancement and Financial Assistance Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ismail Kumbhar in his presentation on the achievements and research efforts of Sindh Agriculture University, said that the University is committed to liaising with national and international organizations for agriculture, climate change, food security and sustainable agriculture.

FAO-Country-Head-SAU-Sindh-Courier-1Dr. Inayatullah Rajpar briefed Ms. Florence about the new initiatives and future plans of the University, and said that the university is working on agricultural waste and fiber is produced from banana waste, while research work is also underway on modern technology for the survival of indigenous and rare local breeds of animals,

Dr. Aamir Irshad, Project Coordinator, Mr. Ali Dino Kumbhar also expressed their views on the occasion. The guests were presented with cultural gifts. (PR)
