Gope T. Samtani, born Gobind Tejoomal Samtani, is a distinguished Indonesian businessman and film producer of Indian Sindhi origin who has made an enduring contribution to Indonesian cinema. Born on 1st October 1943 in Surakarta (Solo), Central Java, Indonesia, he is best known as the founder and owner of Rapi Films, one of Indonesia’s long-established film production companies.
From childhood, Gope was deeply interested in films. In his younger years, he aspired to become a doctor and hoped to study in India, but when that opportunity did not materialize, he entered business. He initially worked in the textile and clothing trade and later operated a business in Pasar Baru, Jakarta. His longstanding passion for cinema eventually drew him towards the Indonesian film industry.
In 1968, Gope established PT Rapi Films, initially as an export-import company, with capital of approximately three million Indonesian rupiah. He sought guidance from his elder brother Subagio Samtani, an experienced film producer, as well as filmmaker Turino Djunaidi. Rapi Films gradually moved into film production, beginning a journey that would make the company one of the enduring names in Indonesian entertainment.
The company’s first production was Air Mata Kekasih (Lover’s Tears) in 1970. Rapi Films then developed a remarkably active production program, averaging about three films a year; by early 1985, it had already produced around 45 films.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Rapi Films became associated with commercially successful films across comedy, drama, action, adventure and supernatural cinema. Among its notable productions were the Ateng series, Rahasia Perkawinan, Nyi Blorong, Si Buta Lawan Jaka Sembung, and other popular films that helped establish Rapi Films as a significant production house.
Gope’s career also extended beyond producing. He directed Pasukan Berani Mati, internationally known as Hell Raiders, demonstrating his involvement in filmmaking from both behind the production desk and in the director’s chair.
His achievements brought formal recognition within the Indonesian film industry. He received the PARFI Produser Teladan (Exemplary Producer) award and twice received the Piala Antemas, an award associated with the year’s commercially successful film: for Rahasia Perkawinan at the 1981 Festival Film Indonesia in Semarang and for Nyi Blorong at the 1983 Festival Film Indonesia in Medan.
Gope also remained active in Indonesian film-industry organizations. He served as head of Distribution and Marketing at PPFI from 1986 to 1995, followed by the chairmanship of its Production division from 1996 to 1998. Rapi Films subsequently expanded into television drama and series, including productions such as Jaka Sembung and Noktah Merah Perkawinan.
His producing career continued into the twenty-first century. He was associated with important productions including Sang Kiai (The Clerics), Pengabdi Setan (Satan’s Slaves), Hangout, Dear Nathan, The Queen of Black Magic, Perempuan Tanah Jahanam, Sobat Ambyar, Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion, Sijjin, Waktu Maghrib, Menjelang Ajal, and several other contemporary Indonesian films.
His association with Sang Kiai (2013) brought another significant distinction: the film won the Piala Citra for Best Film at the Festival Film Indonesia. His more recent credit Sobat Ambyar (2021) lists him as an executive producer, while his production credits continued through films released in the 2020s.
Rapi Films has therefore become much more than the company Gope established in 1968. Its extensive body of work spans several generations of Indonesian cinema, from the popular films of the 1970s and 1980s to contemporary horror, drama, comedy and commercial releases. Current film records continue to list Gope T. Samtani as producer or executive producer on productions released in the 2020s.
For more than five decades, Gope T. Samtani has remained an important figure behind the Indonesian screen. His journey—from a young man fascinated by cinema, through business and the establishment of Rapi Films, to becoming one of Indonesia’s long-serving producers—represents a substantial contribution by an Indian-origin Indonesian entrepreneur to the country’s film and entertainment industry.
