He said the electricity produced at Thar Coal Power Plants is cheapest as compared to power produced in other parts of the country.

Imtiaz Sheikh said that Sindh government has planned to bring an end to load shedding of electricity in the province. “President Zardari has directed to devise a comprehensive plan for getting rid of the load shedding,” he added.

According to the minister, 37 hospitals of Sindh and Karachi Press Club have already been solarized.

Imtiaz Sheikh said that Sindh Transmission and Dispatch Company is making arrangements for distribution of electricity.

To a question, the Energy Minister said that creation of new companies is must to end the monopoly of the existing power distribution companies.

“Sindh government has decided in principle to take over Hyderabad and Sukkur Electric Power Companies – HESCO and SEPCO, and the federal government has no objection in this regard,” he told and added that Sindh is actively working on establishment of its own Electric Power Regulatory Authority.

He viewed that new designs are to be developed for solarizing the cities for meeting urban requirements.

To a question regarding the complaints of short supply of gas and excessive gas billing, Energy Minister said that negotiations are underway with Managing Director, Sui Southern Gas Company. “Sindh government is willing even to take over the gas company,” he remarked.  (PR)
