Educational institutions never take these issues seriously and often used to deny the allegations to save their reputation.

Sindh has 22% of female literacy rate, which is 2nd lowest among all provinces except Balochistan. It’s because the majority of parents thought that if their daughters go for education they would tarnish the family reputation, which caused early marriages. Unfortunately, the new wave of harassment encourages their narratives. Unsurprisingly, educational institutions never take these issues seriously and often used to deny the allegations to save their reputation.

Due to such an attitude, educational institutions witnessed the dead bodies of Nimrta, Nosheen, Naila etc. Only few days ago, some miscreants tried to kidnap a student from Sindh University, but the management of University didn’t take appropriate action eventually and she withdrew her studies. Likewise, just couple of days back, Parveen Rind, who is final year student in PUMHS Nawabshah, was sexually harassed by her teacher. She was brutally beaten by warden also. Her heart wrenching words are ‘we don’t commit suicide, they are killing us’. She is lucky enough to have supportive parents otherwise in many such cases they are found dead or have left their studies.

In a nutshell, it’s time to take the issue seriously. There are many laws against harassment but couldn’t be implemented in right manner. Parents should also listen to and understand the issue calmly and be supportive of their children. Apart from this the university administration should set an example by punishing the people who are involved in harassment.
