Human actions have propelled not only ourselves but all species into a vortex of peril

The environmental situation in Pakistan is becoming increasingly dire. According to a report published on November 29, Lahore is now considered the most polluted city in the world. Amit Abraham’s quote, “Love is in the air, but the air is highly polluted,” resonates deeply with this concerning reality. What’s more alarming is that people’s life expectancy has been reduced by approximately four to five years.

Human actions have propelled not only ourselves but all species into a vortex of peril. We are to blame for turning Earth into a living hell, as William Blake once warned, “If you disturb nature, it will disturb you.” Our actions, such as industrial activities, burning fossil fuels, deforestation, improper waste disposal, and the use of harmful chemicals and pesticides in agriculture, have polluted our environment in numerous ways. Mining and construction activities further release pollutants into the air, water, and soil.

A view of Lahore

Our disregard for the environment has cursed all creatures, leading to toxic seas filled with waste—plastic bottles, dirty bags, and medical waste—that are claiming the lives of countless marine species. Deforestation is transforming our planet into a future sun, with rising temperatures threatening life as we know it. The increasing melt rate of glaciers presents an intolerable future. All these factors will have profoundly challenging and negative effects on humanity.
