Abu Dhabi
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) revealed that attendance at the ongoing AFC Asian Cup in Doha is nearing record-breaking numbers, poised to surpass the mark set in the 2004 edition held in China.
The tournament began on the 12th of January 2024 and will last until the 10th of February 2024.
Nidal Bahran, AFC’s official spokesperson, stated to Emirates News Agency (WAM) that stadium attendance has already reached nearly 900,000 spectators after the conclusion of the first round. He anticipates this number will surge past one million fans as the knockout stages commence today. The 2004 China edition witnessed a total stadium attendance of 937,000.
Bahran emphasized that these impressive attendance figures are a testament to Asian football’s strong trajectory, solidifying its presence on the global stage through both marketing efforts and a significant rise in technical prowess.
Adding to the tournament’s success, he highlighted that the current AFC Asian Cup is broadcast in over 160 countries across 60 channels and satellite stations. Additionally, AFC platforms have witnessed a remarkable 1.5 billion interactions, with the potential for further growth.
He stated that the Middle East is experiencing a surge in football enthusiasm, with Qatar’s recent World Cup hosting and the ongoing Asian Cup garnering significant attention. The successful 2019 Asian Cup in the UAE and the upcoming Beach World Cup in Dubai illustrate the region’s growing prominence.
Additionally, the forthcoming 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia and the potential bid for the 2034 World Cup by Qatar further emphasize the rapid evolution of infrastructure and the enduring passion for football in the Arab world.
