Introducing Mental Health subject at college and university level suggested

NGOs organize one-day training workshop on mental health and stress at Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur

Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Dr. Taj Muhammad Lashari suggested on Thursday that the topic of mental health and stress should be introduced at the college and university level to educate the youth about mental health.

SALU-Mental-Health-Sindh-Courier-1In his presidential address at a workshop, Dr. Taj Muhammad Lashari said that instead of luxury, one should have limited ambitions to reduce mental stress.

The one day training workshop on mental health and stress was organized by Hope for All Social Development Organization, a non-governmental organization working for social development, in collaboration with Young Peace Development Corps at Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur.

Dr. Ghulam Rasool Rind, a psychologist at Ghulam Mohammad Mahar Medical College, Sukkur, speaking at the workshop said that when anger is high, you can reduce mental stress by harming an inanimate object.

SALU-Mental-Health-Sindh-Courier-2“Sharing your problems with friends reduces stress. A person who causes constant stress and anxiety should be avoided. Take deep breaths during stress”.

Dr. Rehmat Ali Wagan, Head of Department of Psychiatry, Benazir Bhutto Medical University, Larkana, said at the workshop that one to five percent of students suffer from stress due to studying and exam results.

SALU-Mental-Health-Sindh-Courier-3“Using drugs to relieve mental stress is dangerous, as drug use destroys human life,” he said and added that according to a research, 4 million people are addicted to drugs in Pakistan, of which 80 percent are between 15 and 35 years of age.

He said that stress is a state of psychological imbalance. “Mental stress has negative effects on people’s behavior,” he said and advised the youth to adopt healthy eating habits, besides doing sports activities like walking, exercise.

SALU-Mental-Health-Sindh-Courier-4Chief Executive Officer of Hope for All Social Development Organization Rabia Mirza said that her organization is working for girls’ education, technical education and economic empowerment of women, taking measures for mental health.

Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, in-charge of the Students Society Center, performed the duties of the stage secretary in the workshop. The workshop was attended by Tariq bin Umar, Syed Tariq Hussain Shah, Saira Bano Chandio, Sadia Larak, Taj Rand, Muhammad Hashim Bhatti and a large number of student.
