LET THE INDUS BREATHE

In *Sindh’s fields, once lush green, wide
Now sorrow flows and waters dried.
The *Indus weeps, its course restrained,
By hands of greed, its path profaned.
Illegal *canals cut deep and long,
Stealing currents, swift and strong.
The farmers watch their crops drying,
Their lands now cracked, once rich and fine.
The fish lie still in dying streams,
Their silver color lost in fading dreams.
The birds that soared in skies so free,
Now search in vain for a withered tree.
The soil turns pale, the crops decay,
As thirsty roots cannot stretch far away.
A river robbed, a land betrayed,
By reckless hands, its lifeblood swayed.

*Indus, the 3,180 km long river that emanates from Himalaya and meets Arabia Sea in Southern Sindh province of Pakistan.

دعوا نهر السِّند يتنفَّس

صار الحزنُ يجري وجفّتِ المياه.
يبكي نهرُ السِّندِ، وقد قُيِّد مجراه،
بأيدٍ جشِعة دنَّست طريقه.
قنواتٌ غيرُ شرعيةٍ حُفرت عميقةً وطويلة،
تسرق التيارات القوية المتدفقة.
يراقب المزارعون محاصيلهم وهي تجفّ،
وأراضيهم التي كانت خصبةً، قد تشقّقت.
الأسماكُ ساكنةٌ في جداولَ تحتضر،
وفضّتُها ضاعت في أحلامٍ تتلاشى.
والطيورُ التي كانت تحلّق في سماءٍ حرة، تبحث عبثًا عن شجرةٍ ذابلة.
تبهت التربة، وتفسد المحاصيل،
إذ تعجز الجذور العطشى عن الامتداد بعيدًا.
نهرٌ مسلوب، وأرضٌ خُذلت،
بأيدٍ طائشةٍ زعزعت شريانَ حياتها.
تتعالى الأصداء، وتستغيث الأصوات، دعوا العدالة توقف هذا الفعلَ الجائر.
فإن لم يَعُد نهرُ السِّندِ يتنفّس،
فلن ينبض قلبُ السِّندِ بعد اليوم.
*السِّند: إقليم في باكستان، ويُعدّ المصبّ الأدنى لنظام نهر السند.
*نهر السند: نهر يبلغ طوله 3180 كلم، ينبع من جبال الهملايا ويصبّ في بحر العرب جنوب إقليم السند في باكستان.
*القنوات: تقوم الحكومة الباكستانية حاليًا بإنشاء قنوات جديدة في إقليم البنجاب رغم الاحتجاجات القوية من إقليم السند.
