Sublime emptiness – Poetry from Thailand

Azure blue Buddha dream

As it blithely drifts

Sublime emptiness.

While lotus petal thin waves

Lap

A baby soft cheek

Of island beach

It is easy to believe

The humpbacked hills

Slowly drop to their knees

And bow low

To honor

The bay’s

Azure blue Buddha dream

As it blithely drifts

Sublime emptiness.

Each year at dawn

On the anointed day

Tuna fishermen from this quaint

Japanese fishing village

Sail out

To slaughter dolphins

Who rip fish nets

And set the caught tuna free

Each hideous anniversary

Fishermen clamor to the boats

Bristle with gaff hooks

Harpoons

Samurai swords

Shotguns

Grenades

Sticks of dynamite

Slews of other weapons

Boat engines grumble at life

The glassy-eyed fleet

Lurches to squeeze out from

The harbor jetty

Only to find the way out

To open sea

Blocked by 4,000 dolphins

Tail fins foaming

Dolphin language-clicks calling

For a nonviolent pod gathering

To forestall another massacre.
