Seoul National University is hosting the seminar on June 15 in collaboration with international partners in Amsterdam

On June 15th, an International seminar on heritage interpretation and presentation for future generations will be hosted by Seoul National University (SNU), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VUA), HERILAND, and OurWorldHeritage (OWH) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Theme of the seminar is ‘Understanding wartime narratives in the digital age’.
Experts and students from various fields will participate both online and offline, engaging in proactive discussions on international cultural heritage.
The seminar, which can also be accessed via Zoom, aims to gather best practices, promote inclusive narratives, and encourage the active participation of future generations in addressing historical and human rights issues through heritage interpretation.
Continuing solidarity between academia and civil society, the seminar aims to highlight best practices for promoting inclusive war narratives at historic sites, with a particular focus on engaging the next generation. Building on the success of the 2022 International Seminar on World War II Heritage and Youth Engagement, this year’s seminar hosted by Seoul National University and the International Places of Conscience Alliance aims to further advance the cause of inclusive heritage interpretation.
The 2023 International Seminar on Heritage Interpretation and Presentation for Future Generations will bring together students from heritage, international policy, civil society, media literacy experts, the EU region and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In addition, the seminar invites all interested experts and representatives of relevant institutions to join online to ensure diverse and global cooperation.
The main program consists of keynote speeches, special round tables, three sessions, and a closing discussion.
Andrew Gordon, Professor of History at Harvard University, will deliver a keynote address on ‘Interpreting Wartime Heritage for Future Generations: Conflicting Memories and Multiple Representations’.
The Special Roundtable on the World Heritage Convention and Sites of Recent Conflicts will be moderated by Gert-Jan Burgers (Professor, Vrije University Amsterdam), while Christina Cameron (Chair of Canadian Studies in Architectural Heritage, University of Montreal), Vera Lacoeuilhe (Vice Representative, Permanent Delegation of Saint Lucia) and Souayibou Varissou (Secretary General of the World Heritage Fund for Africa) will be panelists.
Session 1 will be moderated by Dong-joon Jo (Professor at the Department of Political Science and International Relations, Seoul National University) and will feature two presenters and two panelists who will present and discuss the topic ‘Multiple Aspects in Interpreting Wartime Heritage’.
Session 2 will be moderated by Jihon Kim (Research Fellow, Seoul National University/Adjunct Professor, Konkuk University) and will hear about heritage presentation in new media platform from Hwayong Jeong(travel youtuber), also the stories of three student speakers on the interpretation of wartime heritage and two experts with Dr. Francesco Bandarin (Special Advisor to the General Secretary of ICCROM/Former UNESCO ADG/Founder of OWH) and Dr. Jean-Louis Luxen (Professor Emeritus of the Université Catholique de Louvain/Former Secretary General of ICOMOS) will join as mentors.
Session 3 will be moderated by Maaike Goedkoop (Secretary General, OurWorldHeritage) and will feature three presenters and two panelists who will present and discuss on the theme of ‘The Role of Different Stakeholders in Presenting Wartime Heritage’. (PR)
