Sindh United Party (SUP) has finalized all the arrangements to celebrate 119th birth anniversary of great nationalist and thinker of Sindh Ghulam Murtaza Sayed (G. M. Sayed) on Tuesday January 17, 2023 at Sann, his ancestral town and last resting place, located on the Indus River bank in Jamshoro district.

The venue for grand public meeting has been decorated with party flags, banners and G. M. Sayed’s photos. The SUP has also erected party flags and banners and established camps along Indus Highway, right from Jamshoro to Sann. Various political leaders, followers of G. M. Sayed and the SUP workers have started arriving from across the province in large numbers to visit his grave and pay homage to the great leader.

The grand public meeting will be held at 12 noon on January 17, to be addressed by the social, political and religious leaders, lawyers and academics from across the country, while the celebration will start today (Monday January 16) by holding a mystic music concert where renowned singer Shafi Fakeer and other singers will sing the Sufi songs.

At midnight, Sayed Jalal Mahmood Shah, SUP Chairman and Convener of Sindh Action Committee, will lead the torch-bearing rally that will culminate at the grave of G. M. Sayed after marching through the Sann town’s roads and streets, to lay the floral wreath at the grave.

G. M. Sayed was born on January 17, 1904 at Sann town, and joined the politics at the young age when he met Gandhi and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad at Sann railway station on April 27, 1921. In 1934, he founded Sindh People’s Party along with Shahnawaz Bhutto, Allah Bux Soomro and Meeran Muhammad Shah. Later, in 1936, he formed a new party namely Sindh Ittehad Party joined by Haji Abdullah Haroon, Allah Bux Soomro and Shahnawaz Bhutto. He was elected as member of Sindh assembly in 1937 and joined All India Muslim League in 1938 while he was elected as the member of Central Council of All India Muslim League in 1941. Sayed was elected as the President of Muslim League Sindh Chapter in 1943 and on March 3, 1943, he got passed the historic resolution from Sindh assembly in favor of Pakistan.

After creation of Pakistan, G. M. Sayed spent most part of his life in detention and prison, for which he was declared as the Prisoner of Conscience by the Amnesty International. G. M. Sayed was author of over sixty books on history, culture, politics, literature and other subjects and had command over English, Sindhi, Arabic, and Persian and Urdu languages. He passed away in detention on April 25, 1995 in Karachi.

Meanwhile, SUP Chairman, Sayed Jalal Mahmood Shah said in a statement that his party has always struggled for the rights of Sindh and downtrodden people and wanted a political system in the country free of exploitation where the human rights are respected and the provinces enjoy equal rights. He lamented that the government has started arresting the SUP leaders and workers to restrict them from attending the birth anniversary of G. M. Sayed.

“The PPP government in Sindh is trying to terrorize the SUP workers by the arrests,” he said. (PR)
