Hyderabad, Sindh

The Awami Tahreek’s central council has announced convening the Anti-Canals National Conference in Islamabad on January 18, 2025 while its peasant wing Sindhi Hari Tahreek will hold ‘Hari Conference’ at Bhit Shah Sindh on February 16, 2025, to defend farmers’ rights and resist government’s Anti-Agrarian Policies.

The Awami Tahreek’s central council met here at Palijo House, Qasimabad, Hyderabad, with participation of representatives from its affiliated organizations, including Sindhiyani Tahreek, Sindhi Hari Tahreek, Sindhi Mazdoor Tahreek, Sujag Bar Tahreek, and Sindhi Shagrid Tahreek.

During the meeting, several key decisions were made to strengthen these organizations, including two major political decisions of convening the conferences.

As per decisions the Awami Tehreek will hold Conference in Islamabad on January 18, 2025, to oppose Indus River Canals, IRSA Act Amendments, and Corporate Farming.

Awami Tehreek Central President Advocate Wasand Thari said the conference in Islamabad will address the serious environmental, social, and economic risks posed by these proposed projects. These developments threaten the delicate ecological balance of the Indus River system and the livelihoods of local communities, causing deep concern among experts.

The conference will feature prominent scholars, environmentalists, and technocrats who will provide critical insights into the consequences of these policies. The goal is to raise public awareness and garner widespread support to oppose what they consider detrimental shifts in the management of Pakistan’s natural resources.

This event will serve as a crucial platform for resisting policies that could have irreversible negative impacts on the country’s environment, economy, and the well-being of millions who depend on the Indus River.

Sindhi Hari Tahreek will also convene ‘Hari Conference’ at Bhit Shah on February 16, 2025, said its central President Comrade Ghulam Mustafa Chandio.

Conference will address urgent agrarian issues, including land tenure reforms, the Tenancy Act, sustainable agriculture, and water management.

Chandio strongly criticized the government’s plans for constructing six new canals and promoting corporate farming, calling them threats to the livelihoods of farmers and Sindh’s environment. He vowed to resist such policies and defend the rights of farmers. (PR)
