Sindhu, a cultural organization, based in Bairagarh (Renamed as Sant Hirdaram Nagar after the Sindh-born Saint), Bhopal city of Madhya Pradesh state, has announced celebrating the birth anniversary of great Sindhi poet Narayan Shyam on July 22, 2023.

‘Sindhu’ is actively working for promoting Sindhi culture, language and music through various programs since its inception in February 1989.

“Narayan (Also spelt as Narain) Shyam passed away on January 10, 1989 and we founded the Sindhu on 1st February, less than a month afte passing away of great poet. We decided to celebrate his birth anniversary on July 22. Since then, we organize the cultural program every year on this day to pay tribute to our great poet,” Mr. Nari Lachhwani, one of the founding members of the cultural organization, told Sindh Courier.

Narayan Shyam, a contemporary poet of Shaikh Ayaz, was born in Khahi Qasim village of Sahiti district Naushehro Feroze of Sindh province (Now in Pakistan) on July 22, 1922. This would be the 101st birth anniversary of Narayan Shyam, born as Narayan Gokaldas Nagwani.

Nari Lachhwani, himself an eminent poet and singer, said that three cultural programs are a regular feature of their organization – the birth anniversaries of legendary Sindhi singer Bhagwanti Navani on February 1, Narayan Shyam’s on July 22 and of another legendary singer Master Chander on December 15 every year exactly on same dates and time.

“Before the founding of Sindhu, we had celebrated the birth anniversary of Bhagwanti Navani on February 1, 1987 and 1988 under the auspices of Friends Club, which was renamed as Sindhu in 1989. Bhagwanti Navani, born on February 1, 1941 in Sindh, had passed away on October 22, 1986 at the young age of 46,” Nari said.

“Even during the outbreak of Covid-19, we didn’t cancel our programs and organized the events online to maintain the tradition and ensure continuity,” he said proudly.

Sharing the peculiarity of these events, Nari Lachhwani said that the refreshment is served to the participants before the start of the program. “This strategy ensures the presence of participants and starting the event exact at specified time.”

About the July 22, 2023 program, he said that event will be held at 6pm at Sansar Public School, Nirmal Nursery, Bairagarh Phopal. “This time, besides known poets and singers, some budding poets, poetesses and singers have also been invited to show their talent,” he said.

Nari Lachhwani said that the event is being organized in collaboration with Deepmala Pagarani of Sansar Public School. This is the same school, which Nari Lachhwani and some of his friends had established decades back in a rented building to impart education to Sindhi children in their mother tongue.
