The hydroponic technology can be successful in reducing potential food shortages – seminar at Sindh Agriculture University.
The experts have suggested adopting the Hydroponic farming in Pakistan in view of increasing population, lack of land and water resources besides climate change effects.
“The implementation of modern agriculture for food security has become inevitable,” the experts exhorted at a one-day seminar on “Hydroponics, Key to Sustainability”, held at Dr. A. M. Sheikh Auditorium Hall of Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tandojam on Thursday.
Dr. Tanveer Fatima Miano, a Professor of the department of Horticulture, Faculty of Crop Production, the keynote speaker, said hydroponics is a method of farming where plants can be grown in nutrient-rich water instead of soil.
“Given the concerns of feeding a growing human population in a changing climate, scientists have shown in research that hydroponic technology can be successful in reducing potential food shortages, while the technology reuses water, and this way, nutrient requirements are achieved, and costs are reduced, and on-site cultivation is possible, resulting in higher yielding, healthier plants,” she said.
Dr. Fateh Marri, Vice Chancellor, SAU said that sustainable agriculture can be promoted through modern methods including Arid agriculture, tunnel farming, hydroponic farming, organic farming, kitchen gardening and urban agriculture, he said that countries like Dubai are also getting financial benefits by adopting modern agricultural methods.
Dean Crop Production Faculty Dr. Inayatullah Rajpar said that hydroponic agriculture is beneficial in areas with soil and water problems, while modern agriculture can produce vegetables and fruits for food in desert areas.
Professor Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Keerio said that Sindh Agriculture University has transferred its students to the academic and research of modern agriculture, which will yield positive results in the future.
A large number of teachers and students including Advisor to VC for Planning and Development Dr. Syed Ziaul Hassan Shah, Director Institute of Food Science and Technology Dr. Aijaz Soomro, Focal Person Kamyab Jawan Program Dr. Jam Ghulam Murtaza Sahito participated in the ceremony. (PR)
