The XVII Kazan International Muslim Film Festival, which started on September 5 and is going to conclude today (September 10), also hosted South Asia Cinematography program and screened some films from different states of India, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Traditionally non-competition program contains more films than the main one. More than that there is no genre division: films are united according to the geographical, topical or other parameters.

The program “South Asia Cinematography” includes the best examples of independent cinematography, created during the recent years in different states of India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. These works do not correspond with canons of mass Bollywood cinematography independent directors take into account the principles of modern European cinema. There are social dramas reflecting urgent problems of modern Indian society on the screen, but not colorful melodramas with dance or vocal performances.

The program “South Asia Cinematography” for Kazan International Muslim Film Festival is prepared by a well-known film expert, a member of the International organization NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) and Cinematographers Union of Russia Sergey Anashkin.

Kazan-Film-Festival- Sindh-Courier-2The first film of the program is “Monkeys away!” directed by Pratekh Vats. The original title of the film reproduces sound imitating whoop, which is used to frighten ubiquitous macaques. The main character works as a “living scarecrow”, he should dispel monkeys, which flooded government quarter in the capital of the country. In this film a snide satire on authority is juxtaposed with reflections on the loneliness of the human in a big, bustling city.

The action of “Yevdu Market” drama (dir. Pradeep Kurbakh) is connected with certain point on the map – the largest bazaar in the city of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. The actors are put in the midst of reality: there is a mosaic of faces, characters, fate. The director himself like a greater number of the characters belongs to Khasi nationality, who confesses Christianity. The film presents peculiar cinema of North-East of the country, states, located near to Tibet and Burma.

P.S.Vinotradj) was shot in the arid region of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu – A simple story about a trip of father and son, an adult and a child. It turns into a tense story of two strong characters fight, reflections on the role of men in Indian social environment. The film has won one of the main awards in the recent Festival in Rotterdam.

Several years ago director Mangesh Joshi from Maharashtra state won a prize for his film “Turner Joshi” in Kazan. His new work “The Wanderings of Ashes” is a comic road-movie with a serious social undertone. In the center of the plot there are members of a “model family” with a lot of unsightly secrets. They set off on a journey to scatter the ashes of the departed patriarch at the “ancestral estate”.

The film “Family estate” (dir. Achal Mishra) was shot in Bihar state. From an individual character, the attention in it is transferred to a significant location – the country house of a rich and gently born family. Within 30 years flashed on the screen the family ties of the heroes become thin, their house falls to desolation. On the first sight “Uneventful” film gives valuable information about the progress in Indian society, transformations of traditional family values.

Kazan-Film-Festival- Sindh-Courier-3Nepalese film “Mother Khando” (dir. Dhondup Tsering) presents the culture of Tibetan minority. It tells about self-sacrificing woman ready to endure any hardships just to let her son get decent education. Not professional actors, but colorful residents of mountain villages took part in the film.

Kazan-Film-Festival- Sindh-Courier-1“Children of the Sun” is the first costume drama of arthouse cinema of Sri Lanka directed by Prasanna Vittanghe. The action of the film takes place in the beginning of the XIX century, in the years prior to the conquest of the island by British colonizers. The plot of the large-scale historical canvas develops around the romantic story about the way sincere love sweeps away caste prejudice.
