Maharaja Dahir – Resurgence of Sindh – Part-XXXIV
The English translation of a novel ‘Maharaja Dahir’ authored by Kolkata-based renowned novelist Debasree Chakraborti in Bengali language. The novel has been translated by Rajesh Giri

“The day Alafi joined Muhammad bin Qasim’s army, the next day early morning father sent messengers to the Arab camp to inform them that he was ready for battle and even if Muhammad bin Qasim did not cross the river Mehran and come, Maharaja Dahir himself would cross the river to fight.”

“Father knew that Alafi had finished everything before he left. Yet he wanted to save the end like a true king. After father’s declaration of war, the final preparations for war began in the entire Aror. Father decided to go to war riding his favorite white elephant Airavat. Among the father’s most cherished possessions was Airavat. He loved him as much as he does us, maybe a little more than us as a father. He himself used to feed Airavat by taking time out of his daily work.”

“Airavat also did not eat from anyone’s hands except father. While eating, father had to stand in front and stroke her body and then put the food in her mouth. After finishing the meal, Airavat would place his trunk on the father’s head like blessing, then my father would return. Airavat was brought from a country far beyond the Hind, and there was no other white elephant available in the entire Sindh. Our country is very rough, so father served white elephant which is considered the vehicle of Indradev to please him. Being a very pious person, father thought that if Gajaraj was satisfied then Lord Indradev would also be satisfied. So he worshiped Lord Indra every year with Gajaraj in front of him for rain and abundant crop production. At that time the scorching heat of summer had reached such a climax that fighting in the open field in such heat wave was quite a difficult task. So in anticipation of rain and coolness, father organized the worship of Indradev before the war. Before the puja began, Airavat knelt before father, then father placed the garland around his neck. He was welcomed first by wearing Tilak on his forehead. Then father himself worshiped Lord Indra in the presence of Airavata. He was the son of a Brahmin, that’s why he used to worship by himself. Father believed with all his heart that if Vahan Airavat was satisfied, Lord Indradev would be satisfied. At the end of the puja, Airavat was fed with its favorite food. Another vehicle of Indradev is the white horse, so father did not keep any other horse except the white horse. After the Airavat service, the Uchaishravada(name of the horse of Indra) was fed to its full stomach. This responsibility was distributed on a group of soldiers.”

Raja Dahir - Bengali book
Maharaja Dahir – A novel authored by Debasree Chakraborti in Bengali language

Dr. Iqbal stopped at this page. He remembered the riddle described by Chadda sir. ‘Find the diary of King Dahir there, where Indraraja’s precious wealth sleeps.’ Isn’t it King Indra’s priceless vehicle? That is why Maharaja Dahir used to serve his vehicles to please him.

And important among these vehicles is the Airavat, to which Dahir attached so much importance. At that time there was a knock on the door. Dr. Iqbal said, “The door is open.”

Sabir Bhai entered the room and said, “I got up to drink water and saw rays coming out from under the door of your room. I came to see that you are awake.”

Dr. Iqbal said, “Sabir Bhai you look very worried, is everything alright?”

Sabi bhai lit a cigarette, sat on a chair in a corner of the room and said, “A very challenging job is to be done. I am thinking how to do the work.”

Dr. Iqbal said, “Any order came from above?”

Sabir Bhai nods his head and looks at the floor thinking something. Dr. Iqbal knows that the kind of work they have to do, every step of such a dangerous job requires extreme caution; being aware of the thoughts and movements of the enemy, so a spy needs to think a lot before starting a job. Sabir Bhai right now needed focus. So Dr. Iqbal sat silently.

After a moment, Sabir Bhai himself broke the silence and said, “They are going to carry out an attack even worse than the Mumbai attack. Such a suicide attack has never happened in India before.” He paused for a moment and very attentively smoked a cigarette, then resumed saying that Fiza, the girl kept by ex-serviceman Basir Ahmed, would be used as a human bomb in this attack; a highly sophisticated type of bomb would be inserted into her body, and then she would be sent to India.”

Dr. Iqbal said, “For this plot, I am delivering ten million rupees to Basir Ahmed’s bungalow next Friday, but for this kind of activity, hundreds of millions rupees are needed, the economic condition of this country is extremely bad, where will they get so much money from?”

Sabir Bhai said that the way India has created a different place on the world map in the last few years, many countries of the world are watching this progress of India with horror. International politics is deeper than the Pacific Ocean; it is not always possible to understand the mystery of what is happening inside it. However, after the Mumbai attacks, India’s politics, economy and social life suffered a terrible blow, and it took a long time for India to stand up again. A terrible pandemic has already put a lot of pressure on India’s economy in the past year, besides a big election is coming up. At this time, multiple attacks will create a terrible pressure on the economy as well as in politics. Many countries will benefit a lot if the current government collapses. Therefore, this attack may have the fuel of many developed countries of the world. Don’t you remember that the weapon found in the Uri attack had made in USA inscribed on it.

Dr. Iqbal said, “I understand, but what are you ordered to execute?”

“The bomb which is supposed to be inserted into the body of Fiza, should be inserted into the body of Basir Ahmed. But I am wondering how to make this difficult task possible.”

“I can do this, but I need to know in advance when and where it will happen.”

Sabir Bhai said, “Fiza will be operated on Friday morning. This operation will be done under the supervision of surgeon Razzak.”

“People like Dr. Razzak has no country as such; earning money is their only goal in life. We have been keeping an eye on Razzak since the beginning of 2017. He is involved in several unethical practices since his college life; every Saturday he spends his time alone in a famous club in Lahore, we sent one of our agents there. The agent befriends him in no time and they end up in a special hotel room, where their misdeeds are recorded on our hidden cameras. Our agent sent a copy of the video via pen-drive wrapped in an envelope and left it on the table of his hospital chamber. After that our mind games started with him at various times. He is told, if he does not work for us, then we will expose all his bad deeds. After that he agreed to work for us.”

“But how did our people find out about him?”

“Double agents. We also have people among them. We first learned from one of our agents that Razzak was assigned the responsibility of placing the bomb on Fiza’s body.”

“We have managed to prevent a similar incident in Tharparkar, but in a different manner; that will be discussed later. Now tell how will Basir Ahmed be admitted to hospital?”

“Fiza was saying that tomorrow Basir Ahmed will go to Smiley Clinic in Johor Town to have his teeth checked.”

“Yes I know, this clinic is on the 6th floor of a Tower.”

“Well, you find out the doctor to whom he is going to be treated. Mercury toxicity can cause heart attack in a human body very quickly. And if he is a patient of high blood pressure, then there is no question. The new tooth that will be implanted in his gums can create mercury toxicity and give him a heart attack.”

“So our people must be there. Because in case of heart attack, we have to ensure that he is taken to Central Hospital.”

Dr. Iqbal said, “But sometimes it takes time to work; if something like that happens, Fiza will take him to the city hospital, where Dr. Razzak would treat him; you should look at that aspect. She will reach the library tomorrow by 12 noon. I will instruct her then.”

Sabir Bhai pressed the cigarette end in the ashtray on the side table and said, “I have to go out at night.”

Sabirbhai left. Dr. Iqbal turned off the light in the room and went to bed, and as soon as he fell on the bed he went asleep out of a strange enervation. (Continues)
