SAU Umerkot Campus, Social Sector to jointly work on Climate and Gender issues

The growing number of brick kilns surrounded by the human population is affecting the environment.

Sindh Agriculture University Tando Jam’s Sub Campus Umerkot and Social Sector signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday to jointly work on climate and Gender-Based Violence issues.

The MoU-signing ceremony was held at Sub Campus Umerkot, attended by Dr. Jan Muhammad Marri, Pro Vice Chancellor and Saroop Chand Malhi, Deputy Director Social Welfare Department, Ghulam Mustafa Khoso, Executive Director Sami Foundation, Mohammad Bux Kumbhar, Sukaar Welfare Organization, Faculty, Scholars, Social Activists and others.

Before the MoU signing, a meeting and dialogue were held to highlight the gaps in the environment, water scarcity, and resulting disaster. The event was aimed at promoting the message of saving the earth, and following environment-friendly practices through joint actions by community notables, faith leaders, and elected representatives.

Shewa Ram Suthar, Program Manager of SPO, shared the objective of the event and the purpose of signing the MoU to work on climate change and gender-based violence issues in Umerkot and Sanghar district by engaging notables, and elected representatives.

Muhammad Bux Kunbhar, Executive Director said that this joint work of SPO and SAU will bring positive results in district Umerkot. Such a network is needed to work together on GBV and climate change issues, he said adding that facts and figures on issues of gender-based violence, child marriage, and other child issues are more focused to work closely.

Saroop Chand Malhi Deputy Director of Social Welfare revealed that the growing number of brick kilns surrounded by the human population is affecting the environment. “We need to sensitize the owners of brick kilns to voluntarily move the brick kilns from the populated area to another suitable place.”

Ghulam Mustafa Khoso, of Sami Foundation said that it will be a great example that academia and NGOs are working together on climate change. He added that for a better environment, we should have 25 per cent forest land in our area, but unfortunately we have only 4.5 per cent land dedicated to forests.

Introductory session on Center for International Strategic Studies Sindh

Dr. Muhammad Iftikhar, Director of Research at the Center for International Strategic Studies Sindh (CISSS) said that climate change in geopolitics has changed the world markedly in the last decade; he said that CISSS was contributing to explaining Pakistan’s correct strategic perspective. Moreover, he stressed that CISSS was focused on its objectives through visionary leadership and high quality empirical research, and quality work.

He was addressing during an introductory session of CISSS to students and faculty members of Sindh Agriculture University Tando Jam at Dr. A M Sheikh Auditorium Hall.

SAU-Tandojam-SindhCourierDr. Iftkhar informed the participants about their core research areas such as strategic stability, global power politics, climate change, nuclear energy, nuclear and agriculture, geopolitics, and peaceful purposes of nuclear energy.

Dr. Muhammad Iftikhar had a positive interaction with the students and explained how they could add value to Pakistan’s strategic and policy issues.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ismail Kumbhar, Director UA & FA, SAU Tandojam welcomed the CISSS team and noted that this outreach was mutually beneficial as such would establish academic linkages and extend mutual cooperation.

He further highlighted that climate change is increasing day by day as visible-rising sea level water scarcity, severe heat waves, and stronger hurricanes have captured the attention of the international community, he added that soaring temperatures have provoked political unrest around the world
