As only a few varieties of wheat, cotton and rice are left in Sindh, the experts direly need to research on per acre yield technology and short-duration crop varieties, Dr. Fateh Marri, Vice Chancellor, Sindh Agriculture University Tando Jam, has suggested.
Addressing the awareness session about different types of projects in the Plant Breeding and Genetics Department of Crop Production Faculty of Sindh Agriculture University on Wednesday, Dr. Marri said that the progressive countries are working on short duration crops, and getting more production therefore our experts will have to research 100 or 110 days duration crop varieties, to deal with economic and food shortage issues.
He said that due to the role of plant breeding and genetics, there has been a surprising increase in the yield per acre of crops. While the experts have done more research on wheat, rice, vegetables for short duration and high yielding crops, our experts have to play their role for the survival of indigenous species of animals.
Professor Dr. Shahnawaz Marri, Chairman of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics (PBG) said that Plant Breeding and Genetics have played a miraculous role in agriculture. He said that the efforts of the scholars and faculty have given the department 6 new projects, and the Accreditation Council of Higher Education Commission has upgraded the category due to its outstanding performance.
Dr. Aijaz Soomro, Dr. Muharram Qambrani, Dr. Tanveer Fattah Abro, Dr. Shabana Memon and others spoke on this occasion. Dean, Faculty of Crop Production, Dr. Inayatullah Rajpar, Dr. Zahoor Soomro, Dr. Saeed Hyder Ghalo and others were also present.
On this occasion, the Vice Chancellor presented a biographical book of Father of Rice and Inventor of Hybrid Rice seed, Yuan Longping, to the library of the department as a gift. (PR)
