As the present mixed party government prepares to depart, it leaves behind a trail of economic hardships for the already impoverished people of Pakistan. The recent surge in inflation, coupled with exorbitant fuel and tariff hikes, has pushed the vulnerable segments of society into a state of despair. The finance minister’s merciless decision to raise petrol prices by 20 rupees, combined with soaring electricity tariffs and suffocating taxes, has further exacerbated the situation. This article aims to shed light on the plight of the poor masses and analyze the impact of these policies on their lives.

Rising Fuel Prices

One of the most significant contributors to the burden on the poor masses is the relentless increase in fuel prices. The recent hike of 20 rupees per liter has sent shockwaves throughout the nation. This upward trend in fuel costs has a cascading effect on various aspects of daily life. It directly affects transportation costs, causing a rise in prices of essential goods and services. Moreover, the poor, who heavily rely on public transportation or motorcycles for commuting, are disproportionately impacted by the fuel hike, as it directly affects their mobility and livelihoods.

Escalating Tariffs

Another aspect of the tightening stranglehold on the poor masses is the soaring electricity tariffs. The increase in electricity rates burdens households, especially those already struggling to make ends meet. Higher electricity costs lead to a surge in monthly utility bills, leaving less disposable income for other essential needs such as food, education, and healthcare. The impact is particularly severe for low-income families who are unable to afford alternative energy sources or energy-efficient appliances.

Suffocating Taxes

The burden on the poor masses is further amplified by suffocating taxes imposed by the government. While taxes are necessary for revenue generation and public welfare, excessive taxation without a corresponding improvement in public services places an unfair burden on the impoverished population. These taxes, often regressive in nature, disproportionately affect the poor, who spend a larger portion of their income on basic necessities. The government should focus on ensuring that tax policies are progressive and equitable to alleviate the burden on the most vulnerable segments of society.

Multinational Companies and Price Manipulation

There is a need to address the role of multinational companies in the pricing of essential commodities and utilities. It is crucial to ensure that these companies are not exploiting the market or engaging in price manipulation, which further exacerbates the financial strain on the poor masses. Transparent pricing mechanisms and effective regulatory oversight should be in place to prevent unfair practices and protect the interests of the consumers.

Conclusion

The current fuel and tariff hike policies, along with suffocating taxes, have tightened the stranglehold on the poor masses of Pakistan. The rising cost of fuel directly impacts their mobility and livelihoods, while escalating electricity tariffs burden households and limit their ability to meet basic needs. The government must prioritize the welfare of its citizens, ensuring that policies are designed to alleviate poverty and promote social equity. Effective regulation and oversight of multinational companies can prevent price manipulation and unfair practices that further burden the impoverished population. It is imperative for the incoming government to take swift action to address these issues and provide relief to the suffering masses. Only through inclusive and sustainable policies can Pakistan pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for all its citizens.
