Speakers in a seminar on ‘World Kidney Day’ at Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College Hospital advised people of taking preventive measures; awareness walk held.

The Urology Department of the Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College Hospital Sukkur observed the World Kidney Day on Friday.

Doctors, paramedics and nursing staff participated in the awareness walk carrying the placards and banners inscribed with slogans related to kidney diseases. Later a seminar was held in the auditorium hall of the Hospital which was attended by doctors, nurses, paramedical staff as well as citizens, civil society representatives, businessmen and people from different walks of life.

In-charge, Department of Urology Dr. Hameed-ur-Rehman Bozdar addressing the seminar said that GMMM College Hospital is providing information on treatment of kidney diseases and precautionary measures. He said that as per the reports one in every ten people suffer from kidney-related diseases globally. He said that the common causes of kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, urine infections, kidney stones, excessive use of pain killers, kidney infection and others. Obesity, lack of physical exercise, not drinking enough water, smoking and family history are also some of the risk factors.

He advised the people to drink adequate amount of water, as very less or excessive consumption of water are both harmful to your kidneys; avoid excessive use of painkillers and over the counter medicines; avoid zealous use of protein supplements, and in case of urine infections or kidney stones do not neglect them and get them treated at the earliest. He also advised to keep diabetes in control with healthy lifestyle and diet changes. Further, smoking is harmful to the body in several ways and kidney is no exception while the blood pressure should be routinely checked as it is an early marker of kidney disease.

He said that diseases are on the rise all over the world, so we should be ready to fight against dangerous diseases at all times. “We have done many adventures in the field of medicine but the prevention is better than cure.”

Prof. Dr. Peer Bakhash Magsi, Acting Principal GMMC Sukkur said that World Kidney Day is being observed all over the world on March 11 and it is our common responsibility to take care of kidney diseases.

He called for raising awareness among the people and said, “This is a task for which we have to play our role as a nation.”
