Provincial Minister for Local Government Nasir Shah has said that all precautionary measures will be taken for shifting the female elephant Madhubala safely from Karachi Zoo to Safari Park.

He directed the concerned officers for submitting proposals to the Sindh government for building a sanctuary for elephants and other large animals in the Safari Park.

He said this while presiding over a meeting regarding Karachi Zoo and Safari Park. Additional Chief Secretary Najam Ahmad Shah, Administrator Karachi Dr. Syed Saifur Rehman, Head of FORPAZ Team Dr. Aamir Khalili, Katrina Hussain, Sabina Dawood, Dr. Javed Memon, Director Zoo Kunwar Ayub, Owais Khan Advocate and other members of the FORPAZ team and Officers were present.

Minister said that the Sindh government is providing all kinds of support for the welfare of animals. He said that the female elephant Noor Jehan died but the way the Forpaz team cooperated with the zoo management in the treatment of Noor Jehan is commendable.

He hoped that international organization will continue its support in the future so that if the animals are sick, they can be treated with internationally accepted methods.

Administrator Karachi Dr. Syed Saifur Rahman in a briefing said that the transfer of Madhu Bala from Karachi Zoo will be done before Eid-ul-Azha. “A traffic plan has been prepared, and it will be implemented according to the procedures and criteria specified by the Forpaz team,” he said.

He said that 20 acres of area has been allocated in the Safari Park for large animals. “Skill training for elephants has started, blood samples of three tigers including one tiger at Karachi Zoo have been collected yesterday. All animals will be scanned in the same way,” he said.

He said that the proposed sanctuary to be built for Madhu Bala will be named after Noor Jehan.

Minister Nasir Shah said that he had proposed to build a 1000 acre Safari Park at the Super Highway and it should also be reviewed so that a big Safari Park can be built for the citizens of Karachi.

He added that the health of the elephants Sonia and Malika, already present in the Safari Park, should be taken care of and they should also be fully scanned.

On this occasion it was decided that the second meeting of the task force will be held on May 4, in which the future course of action will be decided. (PR)
