Experts suggest promoting urban and modern agriculture

Modern agricultural methods like Hydroponics agriculture and urban agriculture should be adopted instead of canal agriculture

Describing the agricultural sector the only solution to the country’s difficult economic situation, the agriculture experts have emphasized the promotion of urban and modern agriculture for food security and suggested to focus on the development of the agricultural sector for the export of agricultural products.

Despite the saline, desert areas and low agricultural land resources, the problems of food shortage can be tackled through hydroponic technology, while this technology can be expanded on a commercial basis, they said at the 2-day training program on hydroponic agriculture titled “Sustainable Food Production under Climate Change” organized by the Department of Crop Physiology at the Faculty of Crop Production, Sindh agriculture University on Tuesday.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the workshop, Dr. Fateh Marri, Vice Chancellor of Sindh Agriculture University said that it will be difficult to get quick economic results from the industry and services sectors in the current situation, but through the development of the agricultural sector and modern technology, export and food security can be ensured.

SAU-Agriculture-Sindh-Courier-1He said that 90% of water can be saved with hydroponic agriculture. “Now modern agricultural methods like Hydroponics agriculture and urban agriculture should be adopted instead of canal agriculture.”

Dr. Inayatullah Rajpar, Dean Faculty of Crop Production, said that this training program on Hydroponics has been started for the third and final year students of the University, so that fresh vegetables and fruits can be grown in cities through hydroponics systems, and agriculture can be expanded on a commercial basis, and in this context hydroponic units should also be developed on a commercial basis along with the training of the youth.

Professor Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Keerio said that due to climate change, increasing population and economic risks, we are facing the threat of food shortage, so experiments on modern and alternative agriculture technology should be done.

While giving a briefing about training on this occasion, Dr. Nazir Chachar said that despite the saline, desert areas and low agricultural land resources, the problems of food shortage can be tackled through hydroponic technology, while this technology can be expanded on a commercial basis.

Dr. Aijaz Soomro Director Institute of Food Sciences and Technology, Dr. Aijaz Ali Soomro Chairman Agronomy Department, Dr. Mehrunisa Narejo, Dr. Shahnawaz Marri, Dr. Salim Sarki, Dr. Irfana Bhatti, Dr. Saba Ambreen Memon, Dr. Noor-un-Nisa Memon, Dr. Shahnila and others were also present during the ceremony.
